Wanari Maathai was born in a small town in Kenya. Although many girls in her time did not attend school, her family sent her to a boarding school 4 hours away by foot. Her curiosity and determination led her to high school in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and eventually to university in the United States. During her time abroad, Kenya gained independence from Britain, and Wangari’s passion for science and the natural world only deepened. Upon her return she was heartbroken to discover that the land was not thriving as it once had. The soil was barren and dry, animals appeared gaunt, and rivers were no longer clean. She recognized that the wide spread cutting down of native trees had contributed to this decline. In response, she and a group of women in Kenya established a movement to replant native trees and restore the land. Read on to discover whether their mission, known as The Green Belt Movement, can revive Kenya’s original beauty and abundance. Will politicians in Kenya feel threatened by a woman defying societal norms? Learn about the remarkable woman and the legacy of Dr. Wangari Maathai!
